The week of March 28-April 1

This week for ELA/Social Studies we are learning about what to put on our bedroom maps for our home assignment due on April 4.  We read "Me on the Map" and found out about making a 3D map and how to make a 2D birds-eye view map from the objects in a 3D map.  We also talked about all kinds of maps beginning with the map of our bedroom, house, street, town, state, country, continent, and world.  There are so many things to learn about maps!

If your child hasn't had a chance to work on the homework assignment on their address and bedroom map, no worries!  There is this week and weekend to work on it!  It is due next Monday, April 4!  Thank you so much for making it a learning experience finding your house number and street name on the street sign!  Also, it's easy to forget to fill in the compass rose on the bedroom map side.

Phonics this week!  Long i

-y.      my, shy, try, cry, etc.

igh.    high, bright, night, etc,

i-e.     kite, bite, write

sight words:  different, full, into, through

The week of Mar. 22-25.

I hope you all had a fantastic spring break!  I sure did!  We were all ready to come back!

Grade cards will be on Skyward Friday after school.  Please check out your child's grade card and let me know if you have any questions.  I will also be sending home the 3rd quarter skills check sheet attached to their math test and Phonics fluency sheet.  Highlighted skills are what your child needs to continue to work on at home and school.  If your child has any Behavior/Work Habits highlighted, please visit with your child about what try hard at improving on.

Yearbook orders are due this Friday, March 25.  I hope you will consider buying them if it works for you, as we will have a autograph signing time on the last day of school.  If it doesn't work for you to buy one, no worries, your child will have a sign sheet to get autographs.

ELA/Social Studies--Mapping!  Our next unit is on mapping.  We will learn all about how to use a map, compass rose, map key, etc.  I will be sending home a mapping assignment for you to help your child at home on Friday.  It has an address page for your child to write down their address--please follow the instructions at the top.

Also attached is a sample bedroom map with all the components (map key, compass rose) needed for your child to make their own birds-eye view bedroom map with some guidance from you.  These assignments won't be due until April 4 or as soon as they are completed! :)

Phonics--We are continuing with long o (oa, ow) this week!  When your child reads/writes words with these vowel digraphs in them, remind them that (oa) is usually found in the middle of a word, and (ow) is usually found at the end of a word.  Of course we also, have the silent e on the end that makes it tricky to know which to use to spell.

Math--The chapter 7 graphing test is attached to your child's 3rd qtr. skills sheet.  They all did well on it!

Today we began chapter 8 on Measurement and Time.

Sight words-I have been amazed with how well the class is doing on their sight words!  Keep up the practice at home!  I really notice a difference in their reading!

The week of Mar. 7-11

I hope you had a great weekend!

The end of the 3rd quarter is quickly upon us.  Our goal at the beginning of the year is for your child to know 1-75 sight words.  Please continue to keep practicing these with your child.  I have seen so much growth in your child's reading the more sight words they know!

This week in Phonics we are beginning long o.  Long o is difficult to know when to use the different vowel diphthongs- oa, ow since they can both be in the middle of the word.  OW is also tricky making two sounds, as in "snow" and "cow". I tell the kids to try it with both sounds and see what sounds correct in the sentence.

Sight words:  or, more, part, people

Math:  Our chapter is on graphing.  It sounds like it would be easy, but it is challenging knowing what to do when the problem says "How many more people chose green than red?" or "How many fewer chose green than red?".  We are learning that How many more and How many fewer mean subtraction.

ELA/Social Studies:  We are continuing with our U.S. symbols and landmarks.  We have learned about Mount Rushmore, the Statue of Liberty, the Washington Monument, and the American Flag.  This week we will find out about the Lincoln Memorial, the Bald Eagle, and the Liberty Bell.  Friday we will have a test. The kids will have to write 5 symbols.  Asking them to name the symbols they have learned will help them on the test.  Writing them down could also really help!!
