Happy Halloween!

What an awesome Halloween Party today!  I feel so fortunate to have the wonderful parent (and grandparent) support.  The party was so organized and ran so smoothly!  The kids were all very respectful and were good sports!  Thank you all for taking time out of the day to make your child's day special!  No worries if you couldn't make it, there are pictures below!

Have an awesome evening trick-or-treating!

Book-it calendars are due on Thursday, Nov. 3!  Please remember to have your child and yourself sign it so I know who's it is!  I will pass out November calendars tomorrow. Please put these somewhere very visible to help you and your student remember to fill them out at least 20 days.  The fridge worked best for me, so it didn't get lost in papers. :)

Math Review Packets are due tomorrow!  Please make sure to read all the directions at the bottom.

Our Field Trip to Kaleidoscope is this Friday!  We will leave around 9:15 on the bus and arrive by 11:30.  Please make sure your child eats a good and lasting breakfast so the bus ride does not make them car sick.  The weather looks nice so a sweatshirt or jacket would be fine.

Peace Week!
Tomorrow is  Pajama and slippers day!
Pink day is Wednesday along with Red day for Peace week.  Either is fine!
Thursday is crazy sock day.
Friday is Jeans day.  Have your child wear CCE spirit wear if they have it!

Reading this week!
This week we are reading a book called,  Leaf Trouble.  We are going to review it a few days and use our 5 finger retell.  Your child will be tested on comprehension questions to make sure they are understanding what to look for when retelling what happens in a story.

We need leaves!  We need leaves!  We are going to read a book about different kinds of trees and leaves.  Then, we are going to learn how to do leaf rubbing!  So, if anyone would like to send in different kinds of leaves from your yard on Wednesday and Thursday, we could see if some of them are in our book we read and then do the leaf rubbing!

Sight words:  I, at, love
Color of the week:  Pink

Math this week!
Ordering numbers on a number line and reviewing fewer and more.  Our Topic 4 math test will be Monday or Tuesday!  The car is a great place to give your child a number and ask them to tell you 1-2 more, or 1-2 fewer.  You can start with numbers less than 10 and go higher if they are getting it!

The week of Oct. 24-28.

These beautiful weekends are spoiling us all!  San Diego weather and the beautiful fall colors make  for a perfect outdoor activity!  Hopefully we will have a few more before winter begins.

Thank you for getting the address page turned in on time today!  The bedroom maps are due on Wednesday if you haven't already turned it in.  Please have your child color it, as it makes it more fun to look at for all.  Also, have them label the pictures with the first letter.  It helps them to remember what all is in their map when they share it with the class.

Today we talked about the compass on a map, the map key, and we looked at different kinds of maps; such as a flat map, globe, and model-3D map.  We learned what our country name is and labeled it on our country.  Can your child tell you our country name?  We will be finding our state and city on a map too.

Seesaw!  I hope all of you were able to find time this weekend to watch your child's video telling about their favorite part of the story we read.  They were so proud of themselves!  Let me know if you've had any problems getting on Seesaw to watch it.

Friday is the author visit!  It is from 1:00-1:30, but you are welcome to bring your child up to see the presentation if you are able!  It will be in the gym.

Pumpkin measuring activity.
I have heard from a few of you that you are willing to let us borrow your medium to large size pumpkin (s).  I would like to make sure I have 5, so please let me know  if you offered to send one or two in, so I know we have enough. If you can, please write your name on the bottom, so I know who to get them back to.  You can drop them off on Thursday in the car loop and I will return them to you after school on Friday.

The week of Oct. 18-21.

I hope all the kids enjoyed some extra time to play over the last four days!  Before long it will be Thanksgiving Break!

First of all I have to apologize again for not remembering to get on Istation and check out who reached the goal of 60 minutes!  Will you please let me know if you know that your child reached it by Saturday?  I now have an alarm on my phone to check it on Saturday evenings. Hopefully, I'll get in the habit of checking!  I sure wish I could check past weeks!
While I was looking for minutes on Istation, I noticed that a few kids are struggling in areas.  I believe you are also able to check a parent report to see how your child is doing.  I am wanting your children to get on Istation as much as they can.  However, it isn't helping them if they are guessing and struggling to understand the concept.  Please let your child know that they need to ask you for help if they don't understand what they are to do.  The vocabulary portion looks difficult at a Kindergarten level, but some are also struggling with letter identification, sounds of letters, and initial letter sound of pictures shown.

Pumpkin measuring:  Next Friday, Oct. 28,  we are going to do a fun measuring activity using pumpkins!  If you have medium to large pumpkins not carved yet, and you wouldn't mind if we measured them, please let me know.  I need 4.  Write your name on the bottom.  I can retrieve them in the car loop so your child doesn't have to carry  them. I would like them the day before, Oct. 27.  I will give them back Friday in the car loop.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

Me on the Map:  We are going to be learning about maps next week also.  I will be sending home 2 homework sheets for you to help your child write their address and draw a map of their bedroom.  It would be a great time to make sure your child knows their address!   They need to add the direction symbols on the compass in the corner first.  Then, help them draw pictures of what is in their room.  You can help them use a ruler if they want to, it would be great practice to learn how to draw straight lines!  The more detail the better!  They should show where the door, closet, and window (s) are.  Any fixed objects should be drawn.  When we get them all back, the kids get to share what's in their room.  Coloring it nicely adds great detail to their map also!  Thank you for your guidance!

Pumpkin Quilt Activity:  We are going to learn how to make a paper quilt piece using the AB pattern.   Then, we are going to read a book called, The Legend of Spookley, the Square Pumpkin.  We will share our favorite parts of the book and draw a picture of our favorite part on a white quilt square.  I will put the quilt piece and and picture together to make a class quilt!
The class is going to learn how to take a picture of their illustrated picture square on an app called, Seesaw, on the Ipad.  I will be sending out information to you on how to see your child's picture once we have learned how to do it!  I am excited to try out Seesaw in my classroom this year!

Reading!
Theme 6  Meet My Family
Theme Book:  Families One and All
vocab.:  each, celebration, describe (we talked today about using details such as colors to describe something.  (Play guessing games or I spy with clues like: it is big, has orange and black spots, and can reach leaves...a giraffe)
comprehension skills:  creating images, fix -up strategies (this is when you use the beginning sound of a word and picture clues, to figure out what a word might be)  We are doing this in our small group when reading the little books!

Color of the week:  white (wear white tomorrow)

Math
Topic 4
This week we are using the verbiage "less", "fewer", "more", and "greater" when comparing numbers to 10.  Today was difficult when we used "less" and "greater".  Please review your child's math worksheet and give them examples to answer what's less and greater.  I think a few were getting confused on the what "less" means.

I hope everyone enjoyed some extra rest over the long break!  I was able to get back to my healthy self with the extra days!  The kids seemed all rested too!  We had a great day of learning!  This is a long blog, so I hope you find time to read it!  Lots of information!

I had 100% come to conferences Wednesday!  Thank you so much for taking off work and/or time out of your day to visit with me about your wonderful child!  Working together we will be able to get your child ready for first grade by the end of the year!  If you ever have any questions about how your child is doing or what they could work on, please shoot me an email.

I spoke to you all about our new "school/home" program called Istation.  I hope you were all able to get your child on it over the break.  I believe there were a few of you that I didn't mention about how many minutes I would like for them to get on it at home.  I would like them to be on it 40-60 min. That's only 10 min. a day or 15 min. for 4 days.  If you make it a routine to get on Istation before getting on other games or watching tv, they will have their time quickly!  It will really help with their phonics (using sounds to make words) and reading!  I plan on trying to give out certificates, but need to figure it all out first.  I will let you know more about that later.

2nd quarter sight word flashcards.  These came home in their folders today.  Please check their backpack if they are not in there.  We had our first 2nd quarter word today:  for.

Spelling City.  This is a game that I put on the sidebar of my Blog.  It has first and second quarter words on it to play games to make learning them fun!  If you click on the "play games" button, your child can play many games.  Then, click on the "free" button on the side so they can play free games.  You will want to play around with these games first and it would be good to have a list of the 1st and 2nd words handy to look at.  I have attached a list with both quarters on it.

Other games on the Blog.  Two more great learning games for your child to play after finishing Istation are:  "Starfall" and "ABCya".  They are also on my Blog sidebar to go to.  They both have math components.

Apple Day!  Please remember to send in one red apple per person by Friday. Thank you!

Reading this week!
Theme story:  Building Buddy!  The kids will do a retelling test over this story next week.  We will be talking about the 5 finger retell:  1. characters in the story  2.  the setting (where and time)  3.  what happened in the beginning  4.  what happened in the middle  5.  what happened at the end
It would be great comprehension practice if you also do the 5 finger retell at home after reading a book with your child!  Don't forget to review the "Parts of a book" when you read to your child.  We are working on the author, illustrator, and publisher jobs, and pointing to the title and illustration.

Vocabulary:  positive, special, bone

Phoneme blending:  We will use the "body walk" when sounding out words.  We will touch our head with the first sound "c", touch our shoulders with the 2nd sound "a", and touch our waist with the third sound "t" and then blend it to say "cat".  You will see your child doing this more when sounding out cvc (consonant-vowel-consonant) words.

Letter of the week:  short a (make an alligator action with sound)
sight words:  was, for, see (not a required sight word, but good to know!)  We just learned the rhyme today:  when 2 vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.  We will say this when we see two vowels together like "ee" in see.

Color of the week:  Brown  (Brown day will be Thursday instead of Wednesday since we have school pictures Wednesday.)  So, the color snack will also be on Thursday!

Math this week!
Topic 3  Six to Ten~ We are reading, counting, and writing 6-10.

Math packet.  You will find a math packet in the folder today over the numbers 6-10.  Please watch how your child is writing the numbers.  They really need the practice, but if it's not written correctly, then it will take longer for them to write.  To make an 8- make and "S" and go back home.  To make a 9-- make a "c", go back up, and big line down.  Return by next Monday or when done!
