Our last full week of school!

I hope all of you mothers had a fabulous Mother's Day!  The weather was awesome!

This week we are finishing our last Theme in our reading.  Next year we will have a new reading series that will be different than you are used to seeing.

Our last reading theme is called, "Does it Sink or Float?"
We will be reading a book called, "Sink or Float".
Vocab. this week--sink, heavy, collect, predict, study, float
We will do an sink or float experiment this week using different objects, making predictions, and recording our results.

Friday we are going to demonstrate "Engineering Design" by constructing a boat with a partner using given materials.  Then, we will see how many marbles it will hold before it sinks!
The partners have to work together to design it on paper first, then they will construct it.

Digraph:  When 2 letters that are together make a totally different sound then when they are separate.
Digraphs:  We are reviewing the consonant digraphs:  ch, sh, wh, th, ph, and we added gh today.
The vowel digraphs we are reviewing are:  ai, ay, ea, ee, ow, oa


Math this week!  I am introducing fractions!  Today I showed them fractions by using our play pizza.  We learned that 3/6 is the same as 1/2.  Then, we showed 1/2 on our worksheet.  Finally, each child got a small Hershey's bar and had to follow my instructions breaking apart, 1/4, 2/4/, 3/4, and 1/2.  Then, I would tell them to eat 1/4, 2/4, and 1/4.  It was a fun activity!

We will also revisit Geoboards and have fun making shapes and fractions with them!

Metamorphosis!  Our last animal we are learning about that grows through stages is the Frog.  Today we learned it has 5 stages of growth compared to 4 stages for the butterfly.  We will also learn the difference between frogs and toads. 

Our last day of school for Kindergarten is Tuesday, May 23.  1st-5th will go a half day on the 24th.  I mentioned last week about a Power Point that we will watch on the last day with pictures from the whole year.  If you would like to come watch it with us, you are welcome!  Unfortunately, no siblings are able to join us.  We will watch it around 11:15 next Tuesday, our last day.  If you are coming, and would like to send in cookies, that would be great!  It will last around 25 min. so your child can go with you after the Power Point.

Tomorrow will be the last testing day for our 4 goals!  I only have 5 who have passed tying shoes.  Hopefully there will be more tomorrow.  Please refer to the sight words your child missed on the sheet I sent home 2 Fridays ago.  See if your child can have them memorized!


Friday we have a guest speaker who will visit with the kids on bullying.  It's so important that the kids understand what that means at an early age.

Field Day!!

What a beautiful day for field day!  It was great having a huge parent turn-out!  Check out our pictures below.

We let our Painted Ladies free!

The week of May 8-12.

We are winding down on lots of things in Kindergarten.  The walls will begin to look cleaner and my desk may look cleaner too!  LOL!

All of our butterflies hatched out and we will let them go tomorrow!  Unfortunately, our butterflies, the Painted Ladies, only have a life-span of 2 weeks!  So, we want them to be able to reproduce and have time to lay eggs before their life-span is over.  Other butterflies have a longer life-span.

This week we will learn about how a butterfly and moth are the same and different.  We will have fun reading, The Hungry Caterpillar, while doing an activity.  Then, we will make a Butterfly Life Cycle sequence book to make sure we understand the order.

Our last life cycle to learn about next week will be that of the Frog.  :)

Farm Day frames that the kids made on Friday were sent home that day.  A picture of your child was taken holding an animal from our petting zoo.  When it is given to me, I will send it home to be put in the Farm frame.  Please keep the frame in a safe place until you receive the picture.

Sight words!  We will be reviewing color words and number words this week!  

A reminder that I will have my parent helper test your child on subtraction facts from 5, any missed sight words from our 50, and tying shoes if they are ready!  They are also being tested over reading color words and number words.  Most only have a couple to pass.

Tying shoes--Keep in mind if you find a video on tying shoes an easier way than the "old" way we all probably learned, it may not be the way you would want your child to be tying shoes when they are a teenager or an adult.  

We just took our last Topic math test over Decomposing numbers 11-19.  Those will be returned tomorrow.  The rest of the week we will work on telling time to the hour and being able to write the time to the hour. Example:  9:00.

Poems-- We are just about done with our Poem packet that we read, look for sight words, label nouns and verbs, and color a picture about the poem.  They are fun poems that your child may be able to read to you when it comes home!  

On Mon. May 22, we will have a class yearbook signing party and enjoy checking out our yearbooks.  Then, Mrs. Hammond's class and Mrs. Casper's class will join us to sign their books!  Thank you so much for purchasing a yearbook for your child!  I believe everyone bought one!  They will go home that day!

Kindergarten certificates--I will pass out Kindergarten certificates and a gift from me on the last day.  It is not a graduation.  I will have a snack while we watch our Kindergarten power point with pics from the whole year!  Thank you to Brooke and Brandon Riffel, Andrew's mom and dad, for putting it together!  You will be sent the Power Point to enjoy at home! I'd like it to be a surprise for the kids!
