The week of Aug. 28-Sept. 1.

The weather was beautiful this weekend!  This week looks to be the same!

Thank you all for coming to my Parent Information Night or reaching out to me if you couldn't be there!  I know you are all busy and it meant a lot that you took time to come hear about what will be happening in Kindergarten this year!  We Kindergarten teachers were also happy to show you our Imagination Station that I'm sure your child has been talking about!  It is a wonderful place for them to explore, use their imagination, practice their socialization, and investigate!

This week in Reading!
I will be reading a different trade book each day, talking about the book parts, and asking the 5-finger retell about each book to focus on their comprehension of the story.  Today we read "Chrysanthemum".  The 5-finger retell is:
1.  the characters
2.  the setting
3.  the beginning
4.  the middle
5.  the end

It would help you to know if your child is understanding what you are reading to them if you also do the  5-finger retell at home!  It's a quick practice each time you read!

The letters and sounds introduced this week are:  Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk.  We will also be learning how to write them correctly from the top down.  See the Handwriting Without Tears Model in your parent info. packet for the correct verbage of writing these letters.  We are using little chalkboard and dry-erase boards to write them.  Review writing Aa-Ee at home.

Read to Self!
We each got a book box with one book in it to practice reading to ourselves away from our friends.  They all did a great job "reading" the pictures!  Each day we will try to build up our stamina so that we are ready to read for 15-20 min. when Mrs. Scott works with small groups.

Writing Journals
This week I am going to introduce how to write the date at the top of our journal books, then drawing a picture about a certain topic.  If your child is already writing, they will be able to add words about their picture.  We are also working on labeling our pictures with the beginning sound.

Sight Word Flashcards
Have you had a chance to cut the first quarter sight words and put them on a ring yet?  We have only had "I" out of the 50 so far.  This week we have "like" but it is not one of our 50 required to learn.  It's a great one to write sentences with though!

Our color of the week is yellow!  We will wear yellow on Wednesday!  Hopefully, Mrs. Scott remembers too!

Math
This week we are finishing up our first Topic in Math.  We are writing 4 and 5 along with counting.  Our topic test will be on Thursday.

Today, I am sending home handwriting worksheets 2, 3, 4.  Please have your child complete them and return tomorrow or Wednesday.  Look over them and make sure he/she is writing the numbers correctly. Beginning at the top! Use only pencil on homework pages please!
