Thew week of Sept. 25-27.

I hope you had a great weekend!

We have a short week with Parent/Teacher conferences Wed. and Thurs.  As a reminder, your KDG does have school all day on Wednesday.  Conferences begin after school.  I am looking forward to meeting with you!  Please let me know if there's a change or you are unable to make it last minute.  I won't be able to check my email while conferencing, so please call the office and they will let me know.

Pajama Day tomorrow!  It looks like it's really going to cool down tomorrow and possibly rain.  If your child wants to wear slippers, it may be a good idea to have them bring them in their backpack.  They will want tennis shoes for recess anyway.

This week in Reading!
We have really touched what rules are with this new reading series!  We have read fiction and nonfiction books on rules.  This week we are reading a book called, "What are rules at School", looking for the main idea and details in the book.  We are making connections between the rules in the book and in our own lives.  Then, we are comparing and contrasting the stories we have read.

Beginning and Ending sounds of words--  We have mainly listened for the beginning sounds of words.  This week we are listening for the ending sounds of words.  This is more difficult for the kids to hear the ending sound.  It would be easy to practice beginning and ending sounds of words in the car while you are driving!

Sight word this week--the
Sight words tested over so far--I, can, do, not, if, as, the  extra words:  like, see
Words left for 1st quarter:  we, by
We are already about done with introducing the first 11 words for first quarter!  We will continue to introduce 1-2 words a week even though the words are listed as 2nd quarter words.  Please keep reviewing 5-10 min. a day, so words aren't forgotten.

Handwriting--we have written F, E, D, P, B, R so far in our book.  The handwriting page with the verbiage was in the Parent Information Night Packet.  Please have your child practice the letters and refer back to that page to make sure they are writing them correctly!  I am so pleased with how most of the class automatically writes their letters at the top!

Next letters:  N, M this week

Math this week!
We are writing numbers 8, 9, 10 this week which is a review from our handwriting pages we did a few weeks ago.

In social studies we will be reviewing the seasons of the apple tree like we drew in our mini apple tree book.  With Apple Day coming soon, we will also be learning who Johnny Appleseed is!

Snack!  We could use more snacks if you happen to make a trip to the store!  It is really helpful to have individually wrapped snacks if possible.  Also, if you see a box with an amount less than 20, would you please just pick up a couple of them?  It helps so we have the same snack for everyone.  Then, on some days we have "leftover" day and I mix and match snacks to make 20.  Thank you so much for contributing to our snacks!

The week of Sept. 18-22.

Happy Monday!  We have had a great day of learning in Kindergarten!  The kids were all rested and ready to learn today!  Thank you for making sure your child got a good night's rest last night!  Keep it up!  It really makes a difference in their ability to focus.

This week in reading!
We began Unit 1 in our new reading program, Benchmark Advance.  We will be reading a nonfiction book, "Let's Play by the Rules" a few days noticing how photographs are in a nonfiction book; whereas illustrations are in a fiction book like we will be reading later this week.  We will also discuss how their are facts and details in nonfiction books. Then, we will learn what a web organizer is and make one over the rules from the text. After reading our fiction book,"A New Pet" and retelling the events in the story, we will make a compare/contrast chart over the nonfiction/fiction books.

Nouns--Can you believe we will already be learning what a noun is?  We will look for persons, places, and things in our stories and around the room.  Can your child find noun objects in your home?  Learning about nouns will help us write more interesting and complete sentences soon!

Opinions- Our last skill for reading this week, is learning what an opinion is and writing about one in our journal.

Sight words:  if, as, purple
Letter of the week:  Mm
Color of the week:  purple
We will have brown day on Thursday, Oct. 7 due to pictures on Wed. Oct. 6.  Also, there will not be a color of the week next week on our short week, due to Parent/Teacher conferences.

Listening Center and Ipads
We have now added more stations for our Daily Five preparing for our independent work when I begin small reading groups.  The kids are split up in to 4 groups now for Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listening Station, and playing Istation (a reading game on the Ipads, that can be played at home also.  I will send out info. soon on that.)

Math this week!
Today we took our Topic 2 math test over comparing and ordering numbers.  Please continue to talk about ordinal numbers with your child.  Ask your child what place someone or something may be in.  Some get confused on #2 meaning second and so on.

We will begin Topic 3 on Counting, Reading, and Writing 6-10.  Hopefully this will be a breeze since we just wrote numbers for our handwriting.

The week of Sept. 11-15.

What a great start to our week!  The kids are just impressing me with their maturity and involvement in everything I teach and do!  Kudos to all of you for getting them prepared, independent and ready for kindergarten!

This week in reading!  We are finishing our 20 days of learning about rules and procedures in KDG this week.  There are so many fun books about starting kindergarten that I've had time to read teaching full-time and would not have teaching half day.  I am loving having time to read more books and focus on more skills!  Next week we will begin Unit 1.

Today we talked more about compound words.  I had two kids come up at a time and each said one of the two compound words.  They said them slowly together at first and got faster!  We all got a kick out of it!  Then, we all said the word they were putting together.  Ask your child if they remember any of the compound words we said, or can they say one of their own.

Rhyming will be a big focus this week too as we are learning how to sound out words and make word families.  We will write rhyming words for our sight words "not" and "can" on Wednesday.  Try having your child tell you rhymes for those words.

Read to Self and Read to Someone-- Today the kids read books out of their book boxes for 8 minutes and I even had to stop them!  Wow!  We are going to see if they can read quietly with a friend tomorrow.  This will be a tougher feat I'm sure.  Practicing reading independently will help the class be able to work quietly when I am with small reading groups.  You can have your child practice reading with you at home quietly.  Taking turns sharing what is happening in the pictures or reading the book in a low voice or whisper.

Sight words:  do, not, green
Color of the week:  green  Next week will be the color purple.

Clue Bag:  I began Clue Bag today!  I put the instructions inside that you saw in your info. packet from Parent Information Night.  Please keep it in the bag for the next person as a reminder of what to do.  Please return the following school day!  Have fun!

Math this week!   We are still working on the same number, more, fewer, and ordinal numbers.  Today we talked about how even though 0 has no value, it has a place.  Without it, 10 would be 1!  We will also be putting numbers 0 to 5 in order writing them and with number cards.

There will be one more number writing homework page for 9 and 10 on Thursday to be returned on Friday.  Thank you for reinforcing at home what we do at school!

Lap-a-thon:  Hopefully everyone has a packet now.  If you don't I do have more, so please let me know asap!  This is one of our BIG fundraisers for our school.  It is one of my favorites because you aren't selling anything!  The kids have been practicing running around the bus loop so they know what to do.  All parents and younger siblings are welcome to come!  If your younger child is in a stroller, you can walk/run with your kindergartner.  However, if they are on foot, we ask that you just watch with them, as we do not want them to get toppled by bigger kids.  The kindergarten time is 1:00-1:15.  If you are joining us, you can just meet us out front of our classroom.  We hope to see you this Friday!

Field Trip!  This year is the first year that all Kindergarten classes will get to have an all day field trip!  We are so excited!  We have always gone to Kaleidoscope, which we are still going to.  But, we only have an hour time slot, so we had to find more to do!  So, we are going to visit the Hallmark visitors center, eat lunch, and also go to the Magic Tree House Space Mission at the Planetarium in Union Station. Not in that order.   More details to follow!  We did have to change the date of the field trip to add the other parts.  So, it is changed from Oct. 27 to Nov. 10.  I had several of you sign up interested in going, but I had to draw out four names.  The names I drew are:  Melissa Jones, Alison Hanks, Jennifer Wiltse, and Nathan Pirie.  I'm so sorry if your name didn't get drawn and you wanted to go.  We can only take 1 per 6 children for Kaleidoscope.  Please help us out at our Apple Day on Oct. 6 if you can!

Apple Day:  We had our meeting and have 4 who offered to co-chair.  Two for AM and two for PM.  I have those of you that signed up to help out.  I will forward your names on to the co-chairs.  There may be a sign-up genius going out too that will give you the opportunity to volunteer.  Thank you!

The week of Sept. 5-8.

I sure enjoyed my 3 day weekend!  I hope you did too!  The kids shared a lot of fun things they did in their journals today!  We are working on using at least 5 different colors on our pictures, labeling our pictures, and writing the date!  They are really doing well adding details to their picture!  I have quite the bunch of illustrators!

This week in reading we are continuing to read books about going to school.  We review the parts of a book, look for the five finger retell, and we are making predictions about the ending.

Poetry:  Can I tell you what the person is called that writes poems?  This has been tough for the kids to remember as it seems to be introduced to them for the first time.  We talk a lot about authors and illustrators but not poets.  Can you child tell you the difference between a poem and story?

Rhyming is an important skill in kindergarten.  If they hear rhymes, they will also understand how word families rhyme, which will help them spell words.  For instance; man, fan, can, pan--all rhyme and are called word families.  If I can spell one of the words, I can spell all of them by changing the first letter.

Body Walk:  We began body walking last week when sounding out to read words and spell words.  We place our hands on our head to say the first sound of a word, then or hands go on our shoulders for the second sound, and on our waist for the third sound.  Then, we blend the word by moving our hands from our head to our waist.  The kids just learned about his last week and we will continue to sound out words using it.  Body walking helps us give a place to a sound/letter so we don't forget the first, middle, and last of each cvc (consonant-vowel-consonant) word.  You will see your child do this as we are reading words more.

Syllables:  We have clapped out the syllables in our first names already.  This week we will be clapping out the syllables in our last name.  Can I show you at home?

Grandparents Day!:  Did you know Grandparents Day is this Sunday, Sept. 10?  The kids will be making cards for their grandparents.

Sight words:  can, blue  (We are getting good at putting our sight words in sentences!  We are learning that if we put can at the beginning, it will turn in to a question!)

Color of the week:  blue is our color of the week!  Please have your child wear blue tomorrow, Wednesday!

Handwriting--  This week I will be introducing the letters:  Ll, Mm, Nn, Oo, Pp, Qq and the numbers 7, 8.  Look for another number writing packet for 7, 8 coming home on Friday.  Thank you for getting those turned in the day after your child brings them home.  Since, it is a review, they should be able to write them easily.

Math this week:  We are on Topic 2 now.  Comparing numbers and Ordering 0 to 5.
We will learn about more, fewer, same as.  The word fewer can be confusing at this age.  I let them know it means the same as less, but they do need to know how to use the word fewer.  It may be helpful if you use more and fewer at home also when counting out things such as plates or utensils for dinner.  If someone is missing a utensil, you could ask how much fewer utensils than plates are there.  Or how many more.

Imagination Station:  The kids are absolutely playing terrific together!  We have one more day in our 8 day rotation of learning what to do in all of them.  Then on Wednesday, the kids will get to choose where they want to go.  We will be talking about how if there's only one student at a station, they may like a friend to play with.  The class has been with the same kids in each rotation, so it will be interesting to see how they play with others.

Istation:  Istation is an app on our laptops that are educational and work on skills that your child needs to focus on.  First, the kids will work on it to get a baseline, so it knows what level they are learning at.  Then, they will get to play on it during my Ipad station of my Daily Five rotations.  It is also available for your child to work on at home to improve their level they are on and progress on certain skills.  The class will test on Istation next week.  I will let you know the info. you need for your child to work on it at home too after they have tested.
