The week of Sept. 18-22.

Happy Monday!  We have had a great day of learning in Kindergarten!  The kids were all rested and ready to learn today!  Thank you for making sure your child got a good night's rest last night!  Keep it up!  It really makes a difference in their ability to focus.

This week in reading!
We began Unit 1 in our new reading program, Benchmark Advance.  We will be reading a nonfiction book, "Let's Play by the Rules" a few days noticing how photographs are in a nonfiction book; whereas illustrations are in a fiction book like we will be reading later this week.  We will also discuss how their are facts and details in nonfiction books. Then, we will learn what a web organizer is and make one over the rules from the text. After reading our fiction book,"A New Pet" and retelling the events in the story, we will make a compare/contrast chart over the nonfiction/fiction books.

Nouns--Can you believe we will already be learning what a noun is?  We will look for persons, places, and things in our stories and around the room.  Can your child find noun objects in your home?  Learning about nouns will help us write more interesting and complete sentences soon!

Opinions- Our last skill for reading this week, is learning what an opinion is and writing about one in our journal.

Sight words:  if, as, purple
Letter of the week:  Mm
Color of the week:  purple
We will have brown day on Thursday, Oct. 7 due to pictures on Wed. Oct. 6.  Also, there will not be a color of the week next week on our short week, due to Parent/Teacher conferences.

Listening Center and Ipads
We have now added more stations for our Daily Five preparing for our independent work when I begin small reading groups.  The kids are split up in to 4 groups now for Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listening Station, and playing Istation (a reading game on the Ipads, that can be played at home also.  I will send out info. soon on that.)

Math this week!
Today we took our Topic 2 math test over comparing and ordering numbers.  Please continue to talk about ordinal numbers with your child.  Ask your child what place someone or something may be in.  Some get confused on #2 meaning second and so on.

We will begin Topic 3 on Counting, Reading, and Writing 6-10.  Hopefully this will be a breeze since we just wrote numbers for our handwriting.
