The week of Sept. 24-26!

It's finally feeling like fall!  Hopefully we get to enjoy the fall weather awhile!

First of all, our class just grew by one today!  We have a new friend, Bentley Lair, who adds up to 9 for the boys.  They are closer to our 10 girls now!  The kids have just welcomed him so well!

This is a short week with conferences after school on Wednesday, no school with conferences on Thursday and Friday off!  You all should've gotten a conference appointment reminder in the folder on Friday.  If you don't have daycare for your Kindergartner or younger siblings, please bring something for them to do in the hall.  I will have books available in the hall also.   I'm looking forward to meeting with you all on Friday!

Class reward!  The class filled up our class bucket!  They liked the idea of  pajama day tomorrow!  They can wear their pajamas and slippers tomorrow.  I said it would be best to bring slippers in their backpack and change them in the building so they don't get dirty on the bottom.  We do have PE tomorrow, so they will need tennis shoes anyway.

Reading this week!  We are reading two fables this week and learning what the moral of each story is.  The first is "The Tortoise and the Hare" that we read today.  The second is "The Little Helper", aka: The Lion and the Mouse.  We will be comparing and contrasting the two.  Today we told our opinion of what we liked or didn't like about the story.

Sight word:  We have "see" this week!  It is one of our bonus words that we would like for the kids to know.  Please keep reviewing the 1st quarter sight words at home, as it's hard to catch up once we have had several words.

Letter of the week!  Ss  Ask me the action and sound! (we connect our hands to make a sun)

Handwriting:  We are writing B and R.

Math:  Topic 3 Counting and Writing 6-10.  We are counting and writing 6-9 this week.

There is no color this week since it is a short week.  Sorry we do not have a purple picture.  It didn't happen.

Halloween Party!  We do dress in costumes for the Halloween Party, but now weapons or masks are allowed at school.  Even princess wands are considered something that can hit others with and are not allowed.  Sorry.  If you have any questions let me know.

The week of Sept. 17-21.

Whew!  What a hot weekend!  I'm looking forward to a cool down at the end of the week!

We  had a great time at Lap-a-thon!  It's our biggest fundraiser of the year!  Please consider donating toward this fundraiser to help our PTO buy wonderful things for our school!  See the pictures below.  I tried to get a picture of all of the kids, but I believe I'm missing a couple.  I did get class pictures though!

Only one more week until conferences!  Look for your conference reminder and time to come home this week!  I'm looking forward to visiting with you about your child's progress so far.

This week in reading!
We will be reading two stories a week for our reading program.  One is usually nonfiction and one is fiction.  We will look at the table of contents in our nonfiction along with the captions telling about the pictures.  At the end of each nonfiction book is an index and glossary that we will learn about.

When reading the fiction book, we will learn to tell our 5 finger retell points.
1.  Who are the characters?
2.  What is the setting?
3.  What happened at the beginning?
4.  What happened in the middle?
5.   What happened at the end?
This is very helpful to know if your child is comprehending the story.  When you are reading at home with your child, you may ask these questions while you are reading or after reading the story.  It's good to talk about the pictures and story while you are reading!

Letter of the week--Short Aa--we will be making rhyming word families using the short a.  You can practice rhyming in the car or anywhere.  Start with a Consonant-Vowel-Consonant word like--hat, map, or can.  Take turns saying rhyming words.  Also, have your child write down a word family and notice the words have the same ending such as--"at".

Color of the week is Purple!Tyler has the purple snack on Thursday!
Sight words--as, the

Writing-- We will be working in a Shared Reading booklet each week.  It will be like a journal that we will write a sentence pertaining to the poem on each page and draw a picture.

Handwriting-  We have finished writing our numbers to 10 and will now begin on Uppercase letters.  Our letters this week are:  F, E, D, P, B, R.  We will also be practicing writing our first names with a capital at the beginning and lowercase letters for the rest of our name.

Math this week!
We are finishing up Topic 2 on Tuesday!  Our test will be Wednesday.  If your child had any problems on the math homework this weekend, please let me know!  Topic 3 is over Six to Ten-counting and writing them.

The week of Sept. 10-14

Wow!  We've already been here 4 weeks!  Time sure flies!

We are looking forward to the lap-a-thon on Friday!  It will be in the front bus loop right in front of our classroom.  We will run from 12:05-12:20 as many times as we can around the loop.  Each time they go around they will get a loop bracelet.  When the time is up, we will put their bracelets in baggies with their names on them to be counted by a PTO member.  We should know by the end of the day how many laps each ran.

The form says the money is due in October.  So, this means if any friend or family member donates an amount per lap, you will know how much they owe after your child finds out their lap number.  If you have any questions please let me know!  You are all welcome to come join your child walk/run around the loop.  Or you can cheer them on from the curb.  I will be walking/taking pictures!

Reading this week!  We have Unit stories with our Benchmark Advance reading series.  This week we are reading "Rules at School", a nonfiction book.  We will learn what an opinion is and talk about our opinion of the most important rule at school.

This week we will begin a letter a week and focus more on the sound it makes, words with the beginning, middle, and ending sound, and how to write it.  I will also read books that have words with that letter sound in it.

Our sight words this week are:  not, if
Color of the week is:  green   Allison has the green snack on Thursday!

Daily Five:  We have learned how to "Read to Self" and will practice "Read to Someone" this week!  Right now "Read to Someone" is using a puppet or stuffed animal to read to.  I will introduce the "Listening Center".

Poetry!
Last week we began reading poems in our poetry packet.  We will be looking at different parts of poems to help us learn about spacing, rhyming, punctuation, capitalization, nouns, verbs, and more!  We marked a line where we saw a space on the first poem.  We will keep this packet at school and you will get to see it and read the poems with your child at the end of the year!

Handwriting
This week we will be finishing up writing our numbers to 10 in handwriting.  The kids are doing great writing them!  Next week we will begin writing the letters in our handwriting book.  If I notice any struggles with writing certain letters, I will send home more practice pages.

Math
We began Topic 2 last week, Comparing and Ordering 0 to 5.  The class learned how to use linking cubes to match up one-to-one correspondence and understand more, fewer, and the same as.  They also found out they can use their imagination to construct many things our of the cubes!  This week we will be comparing numbers 0 to 5, writing 0, and putting the numbers 0 to 5 in order.  We are learning lots!

Imagination Station Fun!

The week of Sept. 4-7.

I hope you were able to enjoy family time over the long weekend!  I sure did!

Reading!
We are reviewing the parts of the book each time I read a book to them.  You can also do this at home!  1.  front cover   2.  back cover   3.  spine   4.  title   5. author ( and job)  6.  illustrator (and job)
7.  title page   8.  publisher (and job)

The two types of books is confusing for Kindergartners.  Fiction and Nonfiction.  As you are reading books at home ask them what kind of book it looks like by looking at the front cover.  We say fiction is "fantasy" and nonfiction is "not fantasy" or "real".  We are also learning that nonfiction books may have a Table of Contents.

Making predictions are fun to do when reading!  We will predict what is happening or how someone is feeling by looking at the expressions on the characters faces.  This will help us to learn social cues with our friends too by looking at their faces!

This week I will be introducing syllables in words.  We will begin with clapping the syllables in our names!

Read to Self is one of our Daily Five stations that the class will be doing when I am working with students.  We have been practicing reading to ourselves with our own book boxes.  The kids are doing great, staying in one spot, sitting quietly, and looking at their books by themselves, not sharing.

Sight words:  can, do  ( we found out today that we can sound out some sight words like, "can", but have to memorize words like "do".  It's fun to be able to make sentences with the sight words we know!  How is the reviewing going at home?  Can your child tell you the words we have learned so far?  I, like, can, do  (Remember if I italicize a word, it is an extra word to know, not one of the required 50.)

Letters of the week!  Ll, Mm, Nn, Oo, Pp, Rr  Can I tell you what all of the letters from A-M are and what sound they make?  If not, please pull out the sounds from the Parent Info. Night packet and practice them with your child.

Math this week!
Today we took our first math test!  We reviewed with a practice test on Friday, so they knew how to fill in the circles.  It really helped them for today.  Each was given a cover sheet to cover their answers as we completed each problem.  If I had to help any children with answers, I will write it on the test that they were helped in that area. So, please work on that area with your child at home! Also go over the test with your child, so they know how important it is and to help them better understand why they missed an answer.  I will always go back over the test with them to explain why any were missed.

Handwriting
We have been focusing on writing the numbers correctly.  This week we will be writing 1-8.  Eight is hard if they do not know how to write an "S" already.  Have your child write the numbers in order at home to show you how they are doing and if they need to work on any.

Scholastic Book Orders!
I usually send out book orders once a month unless there is a book fair at school and I will skip that month.  All orders are done on line.  Follow the instructions on the letter attached to the book order and have fun ordering!  If you ever want a book(s) to be a gift let me know and I'll wrap it in a bag.  The first order is due next Monday, Sept. 10!  Please let me know if you have any questions!
