The week of Jan. 30-Feb. 3

Happy Birthday Kansas yesterday!  The Kansas music program was so good!  The whole grade did a phenomenal  job!

We are finishing up our Kansas activities this week.

Today we played Kansas symbol bingo in place of math using our sunflower seeds for markers. We  made butter taking turns shaking heavy whipping cream in a jar and ate it on a slice of wheat bread, along with a bit of honey from our state insect the honey bee. We also ate a bite out of a club cracker to see the state of Kansas.  Lastly, the kids could eat some sunflower seeds if they wanted.  I think they were surprised to see how many snacks are made from our Kansas products!

Phonics this week!  We are on to the long o with "oa" and "ow".  This concept is easier than the long e since most of the time the "oa" is in the middle of the word; whereas the "ow" is at the end of a word.

high-frequency words:  park, or, more, people

Math this week!--We are finishing up our chapter 5 on Place Value.  This week we are reading and writing to 120.  If you haven't heard your child count to 100, please have them count orally to you.  Then, see if he/she can keep counting past 100!  Most of the kids are doing awesome counting by 2's to 20 and 5's to 100.  Have them tell you what they can do!

100's Day Celebration!

Friday, Feb. 3!  I'm looking forward to your child dressing up if they choose!  I hope your child is looking for a 100's collection at home!  It needs to fit in a baggie.  See the examples on the note sent home.  Please make sure he/she is the one who counts by 1's, 2's, 5's, or piles of 10 to 100 by themselves.

Our Valentine's Day Party will be on Feb. 14!  3:00-3:30!  All parents are welcome to attend!  Sorry, younger siblings cannot attend.

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be on Feb. 15, beginning at 4:00 and Feb. 16, beginning at 10:00 am.  You will be able to choose whether you would like a zoom conference or in-person conference. Please sign up when it works for you!

The week of Jan. 23-27

Our 1st grade music program is this Thursday at 6:30!  Please make sure your child is wearing jeans or black pants and a white shirt for both the Thursday night concert and on Friday for the 3 concerts they will perform in front of the KDG, 2nd-5th grades.

See Ms. Donovan's email regarding the time to be at school Thursday evening.

I am looking forward to watching the 1st graders perform for the 1st time!

This week in Phonics we are learning about long e with a "ee" and "ea".  Unfortunately the "ee" and "ea" are not as easy to know when to use them like the "ai" and "ay".  The more you read you remember which way to spell them.

High-frequency words:  find, around, under, wash

Social Studies:  Kansas History.  This week we are learning about the Kansas Seal and our Kansas Flag.

*We are also going to find Shawnee and other major cities in Kansas on a map with the Kansas, MO, and Arkansas River.

*We will also look at a map of U.S.A to find KS, NE, CO, and OK.

*Did you know Kansas has 105 counties? We will  find Johnson County!

*We will learn about the 4 different types of houses that were built when Kansas settlers settled here.

1. A Dugout

2. A Frame House

3. A Sod House

4. A Log Cabin

It's also fun to find out about some Famous Kansans.  A few of them I will introduce are:  Bob Dole, a Kansas Senator

Amelia Earhart, born in Atchison who became the 1st woman to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean.  Fun Fact: (Mrs. Scott's Grandma was an Earhart and cousin of Amelia)

Dwight D. Eisenhower, born in Texas but grew up in Kansas and became the 34th president

Steve Hawley-an astronaut

Barry Sanders-Detroit Lions football player who grew up in Wichita

Lynette Woodard-Grew up in Wichita, played at KU, and became the 1st woman to play with the Harlem Globetrotters

Math this week!--Place Value

The week of Jan. 17-20

We are getting close to Kansas Day on Jan. 29!  Kansas became a state in 1861!  162 years ago!

The next couple of weeks we are learning the Kansas symbols.

state flower:  sunflower

state animal:  bison

state bird:  Western Meadowlark

state amphibian:  Barred Tiger Salamander

state tree:  The Cottonwood

state reptile:  Ornate Box Turtle

state fish:  catfish

state insect:  Honey Bee

Phonics:  Long a spelled "ai" and "ay".

We learned today that "ai" will be found mostly in the middle of a word, whereas the "ay" will be mostly at the end of the word.

A tip to remember when to use "ai" or "ay".  The "i" is in the middle of the alphabet so it is mostly in the middle of a word.  The "y" is at the end of the alphabet, and is mostly found at the end of a word.

High-frequency words:

away, one, doesn't, something

Math this week:

We are continuing with place value.  Having your child do their homework will be great practice and review over the lessons we do in class!

100's Day Celebration!

The week of Jan. 9-13

I hope you had a wonderful winter break!

We are back in the swing of school and getting readjusted to following directions and being ready to learn.  It always take time to get back in the groove.

Grades will be posted at the end of the day today.  Please look on Skyward for your child's 2nd quarter grade card.  I will also be sending your child's quarterly skills for 2nd quarter in their folder today to help explain how they did this quarter.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

This week in ELA we are going to be reading "The Mitten" and "The Hat".  We will compare and contrast the two stories, along with doing some sequencing activities.

Martin Luther King, Jr. will be a focus also this week with the holiday being on Monday and not having school.

Phonics this week is over single long vowels on the end of a word.

go, so, no

he, me, we

hi

High frequency words are: new, school, friends, why

Math : I will be passing by the Chapter 4 test we took before the break.  Please look over this with your child.

We are on Chapter 5 in a new math book.  It is on Place Value and money.  It is always helpful for your child to have them do the math homework.  If you have them do it everyday, it helps you see if they are understanding what we learned that day.  It is optional, but I do highly recommend it. :)

As always having your child reading sight words each night, reading books on their level like the paper decodable books that come home or any other books on their level 10 min. a night will be beneficial for improvement.

Thank you for working with your child at home too when you can!
