The week of Jan. 17-20

We are getting close to Kansas Day on Jan. 29!  Kansas became a state in 1861!  162 years ago!

The next couple of weeks we are learning the Kansas symbols.

state flower:  sunflower

state animal:  bison

state bird:  Western Meadowlark

state amphibian:  Barred Tiger Salamander

state tree:  The Cottonwood

state reptile:  Ornate Box Turtle

state fish:  catfish

state insect:  Honey Bee

Phonics:  Long a spelled "ai" and "ay".

We learned today that "ai" will be found mostly in the middle of a word, whereas the "ay" will be mostly at the end of the word.

A tip to remember when to use "ai" or "ay".  The "i" is in the middle of the alphabet so it is mostly in the middle of a word.  The "y" is at the end of the alphabet, and is mostly found at the end of a word.

High-frequency words:

away, one, doesn't, something
