The week of Jan. 23-27

Our 1st grade music program is this Thursday at 6:30!  Please make sure your child is wearing jeans or black pants and a white shirt for both the Thursday night concert and on Friday for the 3 concerts they will perform in front of the KDG, 2nd-5th grades.

See Ms. Donovan's email regarding the time to be at school Thursday evening.

I am looking forward to watching the 1st graders perform for the 1st time!

This week in Phonics we are learning about long e with a "ee" and "ea".  Unfortunately the "ee" and "ea" are not as easy to know when to use them like the "ai" and "ay".  The more you read you remember which way to spell them.

High-frequency words:  find, around, under, wash

Social Studies:  Kansas History.  This week we are learning about the Kansas Seal and our Kansas Flag.

*We are also going to find Shawnee and other major cities in Kansas on a map with the Kansas, MO, and Arkansas River.

*We will also look at a map of U.S.A to find KS, NE, CO, and OK.

*Did you know Kansas has 105 counties? We will  find Johnson County!

*We will learn about the 4 different types of houses that were built when Kansas settlers settled here.

1. A Dugout

2. A Frame House

3. A Sod House

4. A Log Cabin

It's also fun to find out about some Famous Kansans.  A few of them I will introduce are:  Bob Dole, a Kansas Senator

Amelia Earhart, born in Atchison who became the 1st woman to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean.  Fun Fact: (Mrs. Scott's Grandma was an Earhart and cousin of Amelia)

Dwight D. Eisenhower, born in Texas but grew up in Kansas and became the 34th president

Steve Hawley-an astronaut

Barry Sanders-Detroit Lions football player who grew up in Wichita

Lynette Woodard-Grew up in Wichita, played at KU, and became the 1st woman to play with the Harlem Globetrotters
