Job Day!

Thank you to all of the parents that shared at Job Day on Friday!  It was so much fun learning about new jobs!  The kids loved it and had great questions for all of the parents! Ask your child if the parents do a service or are producers/consumers.  Enjoy the pictures below.

Hadley's dad, Ryan Ford--Architect
Mr. Ford talked about how he designs structures and is a producer. He had the class draw
designs for a playground on paper.  Then, they got to construct something using
marshmallows and toothpicks.

 Maeve's mom, Catie Brennan-Cosmetologist
Catie shared how she cuts, colors hair and can add extensions, along
with doing make-up and nails.
Catie brought a hair extension and had her daughter, Maeve try it on.
Catie also does a service.

Emma's mom, Julie Pelcak is an Electrical Engineer
Julie brought wristwatches and showed us how Electrical Engineers put it together at
Garmin to make it work.  She works on the electronics for airplanes and she does a service.

Madeleine's mom, Kimberly Goff--Lawyer
Kimberly talked about how lawyers do a service by helping people.
Kimberly also talked about how she would have to talk to a
judge to tell her client's case

Kinsley's mom, Heather Barkes--Dean of online Learning at Concorde College
Heather shared how she does a service by helping students in need of help with
online classes.

Brooklyn's dad, Alex Matthews--General Manager of Great Wolf Lodge
Alex informed us of how he helps run all of the departments in the lodge.  He does a service and
is a consumer for the hotel.

John's mom, Jenny Rosinski--A psychologist at the Veteran's hospital
Jenny talked about how she does a service helping people feel better like our
counselor here at school.

Our CCE Nurse-Amanda McGlasson
Amanda talked how she does a service for us.  She brought some of her
medical supplies she uses as a nurse at school to show.

The week of Dec. 9-13.

I hope all had a great weekend!  I'm sure many of you were shopping like myself!  I feel so much better about having most gifts bought!

This week we will continue to focus on Economics in reading and social studies.  So far we have learned about needs/wants along with goods/services.  This week we will learn about producer and consumer.  This can be a conversation at home too if you are a producer at your job, or at home, along with when you are a consumer at the store!  Talk about it with your child in real-life situations to help him/her understand it easier.

This Friday is Job Day where parents share about their job.  We will look forward to learning about different jobs, whether you are a producer, consumer, community helper, etc!

Our next fun activity with parent involvement is the Book Bash on Friday, January 10!  There are 4 stations. I have these parents who signed up at Parent Info. Night: Heather Barkes, Missy Storm Kellee George, Joe Gauna/Gina Gauna.  If any of you are unable to make it, please let me know.  More information will be coming!
Thank you!

Sight words:  but, with (these are our last two 2nd quarter sight words) . Please keep reviewing these with your child even when I've sent home the ice cream certificate.  They tend to forget one or two after passing.  Thank you!

Letter of the week:  short and long Uu.

Math--The math test Identifying and Describing Shapes is coming home today. Please have your child practice describing the flat shapes to you--circle, rectangle, triangle, and square.

Now we are beginning our Topic on Analyzing, Comparing, and Composing Shapes.  We will learn which 3D shapes can stack, slide, and roll.

The week of Dec. 2-6.

It is nice to get back to school and see your kiddos!  We have a busy week ahead with our B activities and beginning our Economics Unit.

Reading and Social Studies--We are joining these subjects together with our Economics Unit.  Today we learned about our Basic Needs--Food/water, clothing, shelter and the difference between "needs and wants".  The class has a good understanding of what would be a need or a want.  We also talked about why they should save their money and why we parents need to save money.

Also, we will learn about "Goods and Services" this week.  Those of you who have offered to come in to share about your job on Job Day, could talk about whether your job is a good, a service, or something else.  It will help the class understand what kind of job you do!

Letter of the week!  Bb
We will be reading Bear Books and comparing them.

Your child's teddy bear (stuffed animal) received an invitation to visit our class last week!  Please remember to  send a bear or another animal if they don't have a bear in their backpack on Friday for beary fun bear activities!

sight words:  and, you . ( Thank you for your help with learning the sight words at home!  They are really coming along with 1st and 2nd words!) . Don't forget about Spelling City for fun learning games!  Just go to the games for free when you find my name listed.  Spelling city is on the right side of the blog.  Please move on to 3rd quarter words if your child knows 1st/2nd words.

Math this week.
We have reviewed 2D Flat Shapes and are now moving on to 3D Solid Shapes--sphere, cube, cone, cylinder,  and rectangular prism.  Ask your child if they can describe the Flat shapes--circle (round), square- 4 equal side and 4 corners, rectangle--2 long side, 2 short sides, 4 corners, triangle--3 sides, 3 corners.  The kids will have to describe the shapes later on their own.

Winter Wonderland!  I hope you are able to come to some of the Book Fair activities this week too!  It's helpful to shop with your child for books as it's hard for our KDG to know how much the books are.

Our 3rd Grade buddies from Mrs. Judd's class helped us write our Thankful letters last week.  Mrs. Judd was babysitting a social dog, Chaney, so we got to sneak a picture and pet her.  See if your child can point out their buddy to you!

The week of Nov. 18-22.

Hopefully everyone enjoyed the nice weather this weekend!  My family enjoyed going to the KSU game Saturday and my daughter went on a college visit at K-state yesterday!  Believe me I can't believe I'm visiting colleges with my youngest!  Time really does fly when you're having fun raising kids!  Enjoy each and every day and moment with your child!

This week we are learning about community helpers.  We will be reading about all kinds of jobs that people have.  On Dec. 13 I have "Job Day" scheduled where any of you are welcome to come in and share about your job.  I have five who signed up at Parent Info.  Night.  But, if anyone else wants to come share about your job, that is fine.  I will send out a note that you can send back and tell what job you will be sharing.  Each presentation is only 10 min. long.  Props that go with your job are welcome to help the kids understand more about it.  I will make a schedule and you will come at that time to share.  Look for the info. coming this week!

Reading this week!
Sight words:  mom, dad
Letter of the week:  Hh
We are reading a theme book called, Ungalala.  Ask me the 5 finger retell about it.  Characters, setting, beginning, middle, end.

We are working hard at sounding out words to read and spell.  Using our "body walk" really helps us not leave out any letters.  Have your child use the body walk at home when they are reading to you!  Hands on your head--first sound, hands on your shoulders--second sound, hands on your hips-- third sound.

Math this week!
You will see Topic 5 test come home today.  If your child missed any, they should've x/d out the wrong answer and filled in the correct one.  We really focused on circling 10, writing 1 for one ten, and writing the leftover ones.  This really helped those that were still unsure how to write the number.  Please continue to have your child practicing saying and writing numbers to 20, especially those missed on the progress report.

Our next topic in math we started today is Topic 14--Identifying and describing shapes.  We focused on a rectangle today by finding them on our math sheet, finding one in our classroom, and drawing them and making pictures out of rectangles in our shapes packet.  As we learn each 2D flat shape, we will be learning the characteristics of each such as; a rectangle has 2 long sides, and 2 short sides, along with 4 corners.  Continue to ask your child the characteristics of each shape at home!  They will be tested on it later.

Coming up!

The week of Nov. 11-15.

What a surprise for the kids today to see the snow!  They were so excited and wanted to go outside to play in it!  I'll let you all have fun with that!

If you haven't heard, our classmate, Jackson Howell, is moving and his last day is Wednesday.  I would like to have a little party for him with snacks.  If anyone would like to send in popcorn and cookies,  Please let me know.  We will all really miss Jackson!

I want to thank you all for making sure your child's homework gets turned in by the due date!  It's really helpful!

Another thing I could use more help with is making sure to send a snack with your child each day.  I understand forgetting at times, but I've had to supply crackers quite a bit lately.  I was at the end of the box today, so a few didn't get much of a snack.  Please consider adding a reminder to your phone on Sundays to have 5 snack baggies in your child's backpack, so they are prepared for the week!  Thank you!

This week in reading!
We are reading a fun book called, "Who's in the shed?"  and reviewing our 5 finger retell about the story.  I'm impressed with their memory and feel they are listening well to the story!  Keep up your retelling at home, I'm seeing a difference!

Sight words:  in, on (I moved "in" to this week instead of next week.)
Letter:  Hard and soft Cc

Social Studies!  We are going to learn about the world map to find North America, the U.S.A. map to find Kansas, and the Kansas map to find Johnson County and Shawnee.
We will also learn how to read our own maps of our bedrooms that you helped them with at home!

Math this week!
We are finishing Topic 5 on Numbers to 20 and will take the test on Friday.  Hopefully the homework helps them review the numbers.

The week of Nov. 4-8.

We had a great time at our field trip on Friday!  Look for pics below at Kaleidoscope and in front of the tree at Union Station.  Thank you to the parents that were able to go with us to chaperone.  You were wonderful with the kids!  It really made the day enjoyable!

Reminder!!  Wednesday is the late start day to practice in case of inclement weather.  Last year we had several days that we could have come to school late after roads and parking lots were cleared off.  This will really help knowing how the school day will go if we need to come in late.  It also really helps you not to have to take a whole day off.  The kids can arrive at 10:30.

If your child turned in their October book-it calendar today, they have a Pizza Hut coupon attached to their Nov. book-it calendar in their folder.

Little readers--please remember to check your child's folder each day for homework that needs sent back the following day.

Ice Cream Certificate--As a motivation to learn the sight words, I am handing out an ice cream certificate for each quarter words that the children have learned.  Today, I handed out 1st quarter certificates to those who have learned 1st quarter words.  Along with a 1st and 2nd quarter word certificate for those who have learned the 1st two quarter's words.  He/she will earn a bowl for 1st quarter words, and a scoop of ice cream for 2nd quarter words.  Toppings will be earned for 3rd quarter words, and a 2nd scoop for 4th quarter words.  At the end of the year we will have an ice cream party!

Bedrooom Map--A sheet for your child to draw a map of their bedroom was sent home Friday.  We are learning about maps in social studies next week.  Please help your child look at their bedroom and draw the shapes of furniture on the map using the compass directions on the page.  You will need to write the N,E,S,W on the compass according to where objects are in the room.  Please label the things drawn on the map (bed, table, closet, door, rugs, dresser, etc) . Your child will tell about their map to the class, so please make sure they are very involved with drawing it and explaining it to you afterward!  I am attaching an example to this email to help!

Reading this week!
We are reading short stories this week and telling the 5 finger retell, along with the problem and solution in the stories.

Letter of the week:  short o, long o
sight words:  he, love (not required)
color of the week:  rainbow colors (wear rainbow colors on Thursday!) . Alyvia has the rainbow snack.

Reading/Social Studies--Although, I do not love spiders, I love teaching about different kinds of spiders!  So, this week we will read about spiders, and do other spider activities.

Math this week!--Today you will see how your child did on their Topic 4 test.  If you see "with help" on any portions, I had to give extra help to your child on that section.  If there's an "x" through an answer, it was missed and the correct one was filled in.

We began Topic 5 on Numbers to 20 today.  Your child has counted to 30 with a helper.  Several got stuck on 28 or 29.  See how your child does counting to you!
