The week of Sept. 19

 There is lots going on this week!

Phonics

We are beginning short u in Phonics.  Our new sight words are: 

have, are, with, little

Short u patterns:

up--cup, pup

ut--cut, hut

ug--dug, bug

um--gum, hum

Check out our Phonics page we did today in your child's folder to see the short u word patterns we worked on today.  Having your child read a line a day will be great practice on their fluency!  

I am also sending home short vowel lists for your child to practice fluency.  Have your child sound out the words using onset rhyme--cat would be read- c-at. r-at, h-at.  This helps your child read the word more smoothly and it's easier to blend the letters.

Math

Today we did our math addition fluency pages.  The kids are learning a couple strategies to use and see what works best for them.  I gave them a number line and teddy bear to practice counting forward to add. If your child missed any, I marked them and they worked with me to correct the problems.  

Chapter one review is tomorrow

Chapter one test is Wednesday or Thursday depending on our time with the delayed start on Wednesday.

The week of Sept. 12

 I really enjoyed learning about your kids' favorites as they presented their items in their All About Me Bag!  Each one had fun sharing and the rest of the class did a great job giving their attention to each presenter!  It is great practice for each child to talk in front of an audience and for the audience to actively listen.  After presenting, they asked if anyone had any questions they could answer. :)

Thank you for helping your child complete the "I Am Special" sheet!  I will make it into a booklet to be rotating to each child's home each week.  

Math Homework:  If you see "Do" on a worksheet, it is homework for your child to complete and send back the next school day.  I wrote "Do" on the math homework on Friday that we did not have time to do in class.  I didn't have a chance to email a notice about it Friday.  Just send it in when your child has a chance to do it.  

Phonics worksheets not completed.  If there isn't a "Do" at the top, it is optional to complete and send back to school.  However, it is great practice for you to see how your child is understanding the concept we are working on and definitely helps your child with the Phonics skills.

We are using red and yellow counters to make all of the fact families of 8, 9, 10.  

New addition strategies will be introduced!

1. using linking cubes to count up

2. using a number line to count forward

3. making a pancake-fist with our hand to count forward with our fingers.

Social Studies Unit:  Community Helpers

1.  Introducing what community helpers are 

2.  This week we are learning more about police officers and construction workers and we will do an activity about each.

The week of Sept. 6.

The week is flying by!  

There are a couple of items due by Friday if you can get them done.  If not, Monday works!  

1.  I Am Special--It has the smiley faces at the top.  You are welcome to add real pictures of your child and family.  I will make it into a book and then each child will get to take it home and learn about their classmates!

2.  All About Me Bag--See the attached paper with ideas for your child to put in the bag and share at school. :)

All About My Family--This week we are reading books about families and doing activities about our families!  Today we made a family tree that you will see coming home!

Next week we will begin our unit on Community Helpers.

Math- This week we learned that math problems can be written vertical and horizontal.  Today we worked on solving problems by looking for information given to us and what we didn't know yet.  The class had fun coming up and being a part of our problem solving strategies.

Next, we will be figuring out all the ways to find the answers 4, 5, 6, 7!

The week of Aug. 29

 Happy Tuesday!

This week we began our Phonics book and Math book.  

In Phonics our first unit is "short a". We will work on 1-2 pages a day.  We do most pages together and I usually put a star on one side to save time.  It is tough to fit in all of the pages, so I will pick the most important pages and send the others home.  If your child completes it at home, they can bring it back and earn a homework point!  It would be great if you would look at the completed pages at home and have your child try to read what they wrote to you.  

This week we had the sight words: the, my, like, play

If your child does not know these words, writing them down on flashcards and practicing them at home will be beneficial for reading books.

Math--Our math chapter one is on Addition Stories.  Today we did not have time to do the back page of problem solving.  I would love it if you would sit with your child and complete it with them.  Draw circles for pictures to help them understand what to do.  I will give a point if returned completed.  

There will be days that I send home the homework page from our math book if I feel the class or some students need extra practice on a skill.  I will do my best to let you know if it is homework to be returned.  Some kids like to take it home for extra work which I love!

The week of August 22

I hope you had a great weekend!  

We are busy learning about all kinds of school rules and procedures in class and in the building!  There is sure a lot to learn in first grade! 

I want to thank everyone that graciously donated to our classroom off of my Amazon wishlist!  I have several items that did not have who they were from so I apologize for not being able to thank you personally.  All of the items I received are helping me so much with my Class Dojo positive behavior program I just began today! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

 Class Dojo

Today I began a new behavior incentive program called Class Dojo.  The kids will earn points for several positive behaviors I'm looking for in class to develop a great learning environment for every student!

The positive behaviors are:

Awesome illustration, being kind, following directions, independent working, lovely line, not giving up, participating, raising hand, voice level, wonderful writing, working hard, and good citizenship

I have certain rewards they can purchase with their points.  Each day an instant reward will be a piece of candy or gum for 5 points.  Or they can choose to "bank" their points to save for a big reward on Friday.  I have rewards up to 75 points!  The kids received a lot of points already!  Way to go class!

As we learn about making a positive learning environment this week, we have found out about our library and have book shopped today for our Read to Self time.

ELA

Today we read "Interrupting Chicken" and talked about how to not be an interrupting chicken while Mrs. Scott or others are the speaker.

All week we will continue working on skills to help us self-talk to calm our bodies, and learn about ways to be helpful in our classroom.

We will be doing activities with the books-Pete the Cat, Giraffes, Alphabet Adventure,  Can't Dance, and Chrysanthemum.

Handwriting--We are learning that big lines, little lines, big curves, and little curves are used to make our letters and numbers.  Today we sang a song about "starting our letters and numbers at the top"!  Ask your child if they remember where we begin them.  This is so important for writing.  Watch your child form their letters at home and see if he/she is beginning at the top.  I will be sending home letter formation sheets soon for uppercase and lowercase letters to help you know how to help your child at home.  I will be using the same verbiage on the sheets.

We practiced writing numbers 1-5 on our whiteboards, and will continue to work on the rest of the numbers up to 9 this week.

Welcome to First Grade in Mrs. Scott's Class!

 August 17, 2022

I hope you had a fantastic summer relaxing and enjoying time with your family.  I'd like to introduce you to my family! From the left is  Connor (22), Mrs. Scott, Hallie (19), and my husband, John. We are a K-State Family! We enjoyed a return trip to Disneyworld and Universal Studios.  

I am so excited for my 19th year of teaching and my 3rd year in first grade as your child's teacher!  We are going to have a fantastic year getting to know each other! I look forward to building a relationship with each of you to support your child at home and at school. 

This blog is my tool to communicate with you all what we are doing here at school.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I love doing it!  You will find weekly information about what your child is learning at school, tips for your support at home, upcoming activities in our room and at Clear Creek Elementary, websites and games for your child to enjoy, our class Scholastic site to order books, and lastly many pictures of your child enjoying our classroom activities!

The last day of first grade!

 It's hard to believe that we made it to our last day of first grade!  Many accomplishments have been made by your first graders this year!  You are welcome to go back to past Blog posts to see all of the pictures of our first grade experiences!  We've had so much fun!

Enjoy the many pictures from field day and our animal habitats!  We have been busy!

I will be sending home a packet that has your child's 4th quarter skills report along with a collection of your child's work this year tomorrow.  I hope you enjoy seeing the growth from the beginning to the end! :) If by chance your child gets sick and is unable to be here on our last day tomorrow, I will leave their packet and gift from me in the office for you to pick up. 😀
